Brush or Sponge for Foundation?

For as long as I have been into makeup I have gone back and forth on the best way to apply my foundation. For the first few years I only used a brush for my foundation. Then, for the last few years I have been strictly a sponge girl. I had never put them head to head before now! I decided to do half of my face with a brush and the other half with a sponge. I made sure to use a brush I know I like and a sponge I know I like.

I also decided to use a bit of an oldie but a goodie foundation. For this head to head, I used the Maybelline Fit Me Dewy and Smooth. This foundation is great!

Before doing this experiment, I made sure to prep my skin really well. I moisturized and used a good primer.

For the sponge I chose my fave which is the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. The key to using a sponge to apply your foundation and concealer is to wet it first. This is crucial. I love using a sponge to apply my foundation. I find it gives that amazing airbrushed look.

For the foundation brush, I chose the good old Sigma F84. It is a synthetic angled Kabuki brush. It buffs in foundation and is easy to get it all the hard to reach places because of the angle. Since it’s synthetic it doesn’t soak up a bunch of product like a sponge does. I can’t apply my concealer with a brush though. I don’t find it blends out enough.

Although you can’t really see it in the picture, I found that the brush left streaks on my face. I tried to buff the foundation into my skin as best as I could but the streaks wouldn’t leave. I also find the damp sponge gave more of a dewy look to my skin.

The sponge made my foundation look much more natural than the brush did. So, if I was going to recommend a way to apply foundation I would for sure say a sponge. The sponge makes the application super easy, too. It’s absolutely perfect for beginners!
